Nurturing Your Relationship with Your Savior, Jesus Christ

Barbara Mooney: Nurturing Your Relationship with Your Savior, Jesus Christ

We all know, don’t we, that we should have some time during the day to meet with our God? Many of us have morning routines or rhythms that include a quiet time with God and that’s good!

Is your time with God an established part of your day or is it hit or miss? There’s no judgment or guilt here, because we all know just how hard it can be to be consistent; in fact, I think we grow over time in developing an established habit of daily meeting with God.

When I was a teenager, my church leaders taught that we should have our time with God every morning! Going to youth camp and weekend retreats made it easy to have personal devotions, but back home, not so much. I wasn’t very disciplined and didn’t really know how to manage my time well so meeting with God was more hit or miss then.

Even as a mom of young children, when my desire for a consistent morning time with God grew, interruptions came along and sabotaged my intention. Thank the Lord for his kindness to me, his struggling daughter. He showed me that just moments with him in the morning when I truly met with him was good enough. Sometimes, a verse for the day, read in a devotional, anchored me in God, and I knew His presence and guidance with me all day!

When I homeschooled my children, my husband was a bi-vocational pastor. When he left for work early in each morning, I used that precious the time between his departure and the morning rhythm with the children to meet with God, to read his Word, and to beseech his help for the day, knowing full well that I had not the wisdom needed to teach and mother my precious children.

Now in my empty nest season, the habit established during those homeschool years, continues as delightful morning moments with God still going back to the basics of reading the Bible and devotional books, praying, meditating, and singing sometimes.

Praise God that he knows our seasons of life, and he delights to meet with us in all the beautiful moments, whether short or long. What a kind and loving God the Lord Jesus is!

“Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning, for in Thee do I trust; cause me to know the way wherein I should walk, for I lift up my soul unto thee” (Psalm 143:8).
